French Onion Meatballs combine juicy meatballs with caramelized onions and a rich, savory sauce, optionally finished with melty Gruyère cheese. Perfect comfort food for any occasion.
Meatballs:
1 lb ground beef (or beef/pork mix)
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 tbsp milk
2 tbsp finely chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp parsley
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp pepper
Olive oil for browning
Onion Sauce:
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp thyme
1 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth
Optional: ¼ cup dry white wine
Salt & pepper to taste
½ cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional)
Combine meatball ingredients in a bowl and mix gently. Form into balls.
Brown in olive oil for 2–3 minutes per side; set aside.
In same pan, melt butter and oil. Add sliced onions and cook 30–40 minutes, stirring until caramelized.
Stir in garlic and thyme. Add flour and cook 1 minute. Gradually add broth and wine.
Simmer sauce until slightly thickened. Return meatballs to pan and simmer 10–15 minutes.
Optional: Top with cheese and broil 2–3 minutes until melted.
