French Onion Meatballs combine juicy meatballs with caramelized onions and a rich, savory sauce, optionally finished with melty Gruyère cheese. Perfect comfort food for any occasion.

Ingredients

Meatballs:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or beef/pork mix)

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tbsp milk

  • 2 tbsp finely chopped onion

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp parsley

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp pepper

  • Olive oil for browning

Onion Sauce:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp thyme

  • 1 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • Optional: ¼ cup dry white wine

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • ½ cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Combine meatball ingredients in a bowl and mix gently. Form into balls.

  • Brown in olive oil for 2–3 minutes per side; set aside.

  • In same pan, melt butter and oil. Add sliced onions and cook 30–40 minutes, stirring until caramelized.

  • Stir in garlic and thyme. Add flour and cook 1 minute. Gradually add broth and wine.

  • Simmer sauce until slightly thickened. Return meatballs to pan and simmer 10–15 minutes.

  • Optional: Top with cheese and broil 2–3 minutes until melted.
